Three cycles that do not commensurate
A tropical year is about 365.2422 days. A synodic month is about 29.5306 days. 365.2422 / 29.5306 ≈ 12.368. None of these is a whole number, and no two of them have a common measure.

Every calendar system ever built is a strategy for managing that fact. The differences between them are differences of what to sacrifice: alignment with the sun, alignment with the moon, or simplicity of rule. You cannot have all three.
Read that way, the world's sacred calendars stop being a miscellany of customs and become a set of competing engineering solutions to a stated problem — which is a far more interesting thing to compare.
Five answers
Keep the moon, let the seasons go. The Islamic calendar is strictly lunar: twelve lunar months, no intercalation, a year of about 354 days. Ramadan therefore migrates through the seasons on a roughly 33-year cycle. verified This is deliberate and doctrinally grounded, not an oversight — the Quran prohibits the intercalation (nasīʾ) that pre-Islamic Arabia practised.
Keep both, with a leap month. The Hebrew calendar intercalates seven leap months in each 19-year Metonic cycle, adding a second Adar. verified The result tracks both moon and season, at the cost of years that vary between 353 and 385 days and a set of postponement rules of real intricacy.
Keep the sun, ignore the moon. The Julian calendar assumed 365.25 days, which overshoots by about 11 minutes a year — roughly three days every four centuries. By 1582 the accumulated error was ten days, and the Gregorian reform dropped them and refined the leap rule to omit century years not divisible by 400. verified The residual error is now about one day in 3,200 years.
Run several counts at once. Mesoamerican practice interlocked a 260-day ritual count with a 365-day vague year; the pair realigns every 18,980 days, or 52 years — the Calendar Round. verified The Maya additionally kept the Long Count, a pure day-tally needing no intercalation at all, which is why it remains the most precisely correlatable ancient calendar we have.
Design a new one on a number. The Bahá’í Badíʿ calendar uses 19 months of 19 days (361) plus intercalary days, tied to the astronomical vernal equinox. verified It is the only system here whose numerical structure was chosen deliberately and documented as such by its own tradition.
Why 19 keeps appearing
19 tropical years ≈ 235 synodic months. The two differ by about two hours — roughly a day every 219 years.

This is why 19 recurs in calendar systems that had no contact with each other. It is not a mystical number; it is the smallest cycle over which lunar and solar reckoning nearly agree, and any culture that tracks both for long enough will find it.
Meton of Athens described it around 432 BCE, and Babylonian astronomers were using the same relation earlier. The Hebrew calendar's intercalation follows it exactly. The week has no astronomy behind it
Days, months and years are astronomical. The week is not. Nothing in the sky has a seven-day period.

The seven-day week is a cultural artefact that spread by transmission: from Mesopotamian and Jewish practice into the Roman planetary week, and from there — via Christianity, Islam and eventually colonial administration — almost everywhere. Its persistence through calendar reforms that changed everything else is remarkable: both the French Republican ten-day décade and the Soviet five- and six-day weeks failed and were abandoned.
The week is therefore the one unit where a diffusion argument is correct. It is worth noticing how different the evidence for it looks — a documented transmission path, with named intermediaries and datable steps — from the evidence usually offered for cross-cultural numerical borrowing.
