A solar year contains about 12.37 lunations, so twelve is the natural count of months for any lunisolar reckoning — that is where the zodiac, the twelve-month year and the twelve hours come from. Separately, 12 is highly composite (divisible by 2, 3, 4 and 6), which is why it is preferred wherever things must be divided without fractions.
