What seventy-two actually means across traditions
Seventy-two is the richest cross-tradition number on the site that turns on a single textual accident: three consecutive verses of Exodus that each happen to carry exactly 72 letters. Almost everything else in the cluster gathers around that fact, or around the round number 70 it sits beside.
This page collects every attestation of 72 documented on this site — 8 entries drawn from 7 traditions — each with the source you would use to check it and the evidence grade it carries. The table is generated directly from the published dataset, so it cannot disagree with it.
Attestations of 72
Sorted by tradition. A grade of verified means the tradition demonstrably says this — not that the claim is true about the world.

Mathematical properties of 72
Computed, not asserted. These are the properties any numerological reading has to work with, and often the ones that explain a number’s practical popularity.

| Prime factorisation | 23 × 32 |
| Divisors | 12 — 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 12, 18, 24, 36, 72 |

What the evidence supports
remarkable — overall assessment
The 72-letter count in Exodus 14:19โ21 is a reproducible fact about the Masoretic text, and the derivation of 72 three-letter “names” from it is a documented Kabbalistic procedure — verified as what the tradition does, not as evidence that the names do anything. The Septuagint’s 72 translators, the 72 (or 70) disciples and the 72 nations of Genesis 10 all trade on the same pair of round numbers, 70 and 72, which recur because both are convenient “completeness” figures in the ancient Near East — 72 = 8×9 and highly divisible — not because the traditions are copying one another. The 72 spirits of the Goetia are a late, deliberate pairing with the 72 angels of the Name: Christian-Kabbalistic bookkeeping, well documented and not ancient. The one claim to resist is the precessional one — the equinox does move about 1° per 71.6 years, but no ancient source connects that figure to the Name, and a coincidence of round numbers is not a transmission.
