There are seven celestial bodies visible to the naked eye that move against the fixed stars: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn. Any sky-watching culture arrives at seven without contact with any other. That single fact accounts for the seven-day week, the seven heavens, the seven planetary metals and most of the rest. Where seven appears and the traditions demonstrably had contact — the week’s spread from Mesopotamian and Jewish practice into the Roman planetary week — the transmission is documented, so it is not evidence of anything deeper either.
